The client was motivated to reduce their energy use and to improve their thermal comfort in this home in west Aberdeen
They were also unsure about how long they might live in the home and hence wanted to know that their investment would have some improvement on their property value
The home was originally built in the 1970s, with a recent timber frame extension.
Our Whole House Retrofit service was used to evaluate all the options and our Retrofit Coordinators guided them through the project from start to finish.

Retrofit Assessment
Our survey uncovered numerous area of improvement:
- Missing Insulation
- Incomplete Insulation
- Thermal Bypass
- Thermal Bridging
- Airtightness
- Leaking Floor boards
- Poor cable and pipe finishing
- Cold internal walls

Low loft insulation levels and services disrupting

Poor junction at extension causing thermal bypass

Poor services install and insulation at floor level

Poorly design ventilation

Good double glazing, but with poor thermal bridging

Thermal bypass at internal walls

Thermal bridges at doors

Thermal bridging caused by poor insulation detailing

Cold bridges causing mould
The Retrofit Plan
A multi-stage retrofit plan was adopted to implement gradual improvements with check points between each stage to chart progress
Stage 1
✅ Loft insulation
✅ Contingency Ventilation Upgrades
✅ Airtightness Measures
Total Predicted Saving: 10%
Stage 2
✅ Internal Wall Insulation
✅ Airtightness measures
Total Predicted Saving: 25% from baseline
Stage 3
✅ Heat Pump Insulation
Measures Installed
✅ Loft insulation and airtightness measures
✅ Insulation and airtightness measures to mitigate thermal bypass at the internal wall.

Disruption
The client stayed in their home while the work was carried out
Duration
Stage 1 took around 2 weeks to complete
The Results
Monitoring after 12 months demonstrated a 10% energy saving on the clients energy bills and a noted improvement in thermal comfort.
Although the ventilation system was earmarked for potential upgrade, after 12 months there were no air quality issues using the existing system, although increased occupancy levels in the home could require this in future.
